DAVID STOUT was born in Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1942. He received a BA in English from the University of Notre Dame and a master’s in English literature from Buffalo State University College. He was a newspaper reporter and editor for 45 years, the last 28 at The New York Times, including 13 years in the Times Washington bureau. He lives in Washington with his wife, Rita, a former Soviet policewoman, and their five cats.
